Motivational Talks

Corporate talks

TITLE: Resilience through failure
MANTRA: NEVER give up……ALWAYS give back
AUDIENCE: Business communities, outdoor clubs, sports teams and charitable organisations

Jerry takes the audience on a fascinating journey of danger and determination where his mantra “Never give up” is taken to unbelievable extremes. Jerry tells us how he dealt with a new route on the largest alpine wall in Canada and survived a direct lightning strike shortly after summitting. As ever the real challenge was the traumatic descent involving freak weather conditions that saved the lives of his partner and himself.

DIABETES TALKS

TITLE: Beyond imagination
MANTRA: Diabetes is NOT an excuse
AUDIENCE: Healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, carers and patients with a long-term chronic illness.

Born in the UK in 1961, and married with two children, Jerry has enjoyed two very diverse and contrasting careers throughout his life, the first as a businessman, the second as a professional expedition mountaineer, involved in the world of extreme climbing, over a 30-year period. The third major element to Jerry’s life is Diabetes. Jerry was diagnosed as a Type 1 insulin-dependent diabetic on January 31st, 2001. Though new to diabetes, Jerry continues to live his life to the full and has not let this chronic condition stop his active outdoor, family and business lives.

Post-diagnosis Jerry talks about the day his world fell apart, how he deals with Type 1 Diabetes, a long-term chronic condition, and its effect on his family. He describes what it is like sticking a needle in himself up to eight times daily, whether hanging on a Big Wall in Patagonia in hurricane-force winds or climbing in the Himalayas at 7,000 metres. And finally, his biggest challenge to date, other than his marriage of course, developing his charity Action4Diabetes, and saving the lives of hundreds of children with Type 1 Diabetes, spread across six countries in SE Asia.

SCHOOL TALKS

TITLE: Postcards from the ledge
MANTRA: You can ALWAYS do more than you think you can
AUDIENCE: Students aged between 8 and 18 years of age, educators, and parents.

Jerry Gore introduces young people to the amazing world of mountain sports such as ice climbing, Himalayan mountaineering, and Big Wall alpinism. Through funny and exciting stories, amazing slides, and fun videos from around the world, Jerry explains about the importance of building resilience by strengthening brains, not bodies. As well as concepts such as delayed gratification, the importance of hard work, self-awareness and team spirit. Jerry’s talks are very interactive as he gets children to try out and use real climbing gear including special hanging tents called Portaledges, and huge rucksacks big enough to carry a teenager! His young audiences learn by listening, doing, describing, working together in teams to overcome challenging situations and above all having fun.
